2007 could be labelled the year of hairspray. The film version of the hit Broadway musical was a hit in theaters and the soundtrack produced several top ten hits on my weekly top 40 chart including three number ones: Come So Far (Got So Far To Go), I Know Where I've Been and Without Love. The soundtrack is my top CD of the year and Elijah Kelley, who plays Seaweed J. Stubbs in the film, leads the top new artists of the year. Four cast members, including veteran artist Queen Latifah, make the top ten new artists of the year. Latifah makes the list as she has never charted on my weekly chart before. Zac Efron was on my chart last year with Breaking Free, a duet with Vanessa Anne Hudgens from High School Musical.
The top song of the year is actually a song from 2005. Taught To Be Proud won the Jammy Award for Best Song that year but saw some revitalized airplay this year on AAA radio due to the Tea Leaf Green concert film, Rock N Roll Band, released in late 2006. The film was directed by Justin Kreutzmann, son of The Grateful Dead's Billy Kreutzmann. Coincidentally, Tea Leaf Green plays in a country-rock style with classic rock passages that strongly recalls the Grateful Dead's hybrid sound, circa early 1970s. Tea Leaf Green is also the #7 new artist on the strength of Taught To be Proud and The Garden Part III, the lead off track from the Taught To Be Proud CD.
For the third year in a row, British band McFly tops the artists chart. Their third studio CD of new music, Motion on the Ocean, falls just behind the Hairspray soundtrack on the top CD list. Their collection of greatest hits has several new cuts so 2008 could be another big year for McFly. For the second year in a row, Il Divo, another British group, is the number two artist of the year. Their fourth CD is number three on the CD list. Their Italian cover of Nights In White Satin was an early big hit of the year.
