Some have heard of Poe before 2001 but this was the first year I knew of this poignant singer songwriter who charted with songs Hey Pretty and Haunted. I first heard of Matthew Ryan when Sam sent me his first CD, May Day. Though I liked the CD alot I did not chart anything off it so Matthew Ryan got his first chart hit in 2001 with Heartache Weather off of East Autumn Grin. This is a terrific stripped down, raw rock and roll song that peaked at #3 in the summer. Later in 2001 he charted with Drift, the lead-off track from his third CD, Concussion. While very different from his previous hit, it also went top ten on the Top 30 Rock Chart. This helped Matthew Ryan to be named the Top Rock Male Artist of the Year.
recorded on her own computer with the aid of a Pro-Tools digital audio workstation. Only three female artists charted this year on the Top 30 Rock Songs but Poe comes out as the Top Rock Female Artist of the Year.

The Calling has the Top Rock Song of 2001 in Wherever You Will Go which is the first single off of Camino Palmero, their debut album which coincidentally is the number one Rock Album of the Year. This is a terrific album, filled with potential radio hits including Unstoppable, Final Answer, and Things Don't Always Turn Out That Way. They placed at #4 on the year end list of new artists which is not bad since they only had the one chart hit.
