Defining pop music has been the hardest of the genres since I have been publishing genre charts. What is pop music? I have generally taken the position that pop music appeals to the mainstream and thus can actually range from dance and rhythm and blues to hard, alternative, and modern rock. The term 'pop' is actually an abbreviated moniker for 'popular' music. Thus, the songs on this pop chart run the gamut from dance (Da Buzz), traditional pop (Bee Gees), teen pop (Backstreet Boys), rock (3 Doors Down), country (Blake Shelton), and adult alternative (Five For Fighting). It is no secret the adult alternative genre is my favorite of current musical styles so it is no surprise that the number one adult alternative song of the year also shows up as the number one pop song of the year. Five For Fighting's Superman can be found at or near the top of many charts this year (Rock, Top 40). Along with Train's Drops Of Jupiter and The Calling's Wherever You Will Go, Superman forms a triumvirate over this year's charts. Wherever You Will Go suffers by comparison on the year end pop chart as it was still charting at year end when it was increasing in mainstream appeal.
